A home office desk in front of the window? 35 photos to help you design your home office.
Whether we work from home or not, if only to manage home and family paperwork, we need a home office. It’s a common theme in blogs, and there are quite a few photos on Pinterest too.
Ideas for a home office in front of the window
My current desk is a folding table, not very stable, in front of a window. When I spend too much time sitting, my back hurts, especially when I’m writing. My chair is also folding and not high enough in relation to the table, which causes back pain. For exercises to combat back pain, click here!
But I’d better prevent my little aches and pains by fitting out a proper office.
I had a hard time finding the location. I tested several configurations, including my bed! I tested a bedroom that doubles as a playroom for the kids. Conclusion: you can’t share your office with your kids! I also tried the sofa in the living room, but you have to go back and forth between the living room and the cupboard where you keep your papers. Not ideal either.
Here is the result of my research:
1 – Sit-stand desks
Desks whose height can be varied are the most ergonomic for working in front of a window or not.

2 – The desk perpendicular to the window
How do you position your desk in relation to the window?
Ideally, position your desk perpendicular to the window or facing it. Carefully avoid placing the window behind you. Instead, opt for a configuration where you have a wall at your back, providing a sense of stability and support.
This positioning of the desk can help avoid getting the sun in your eyes and is considered more Feng-shui.
3 – The large window-facing desk
Ideal for installing several workstations.
5 – The small desk facing the window
To install a discreet desk in a bedroom, a small room or a multi-purpose room.
4 – Small desk in a niche
When space is limited or in a bedroom. This installation makes it possible to install storage on either side of the desk.
I find this layout interesting. The window is framed by shelves, which allows you to take advantage of both the storage and the light. People spend more time looking out than working. The window is detrimental to concentration and productivity.
A very light atmosphere for this white office, with a pretty dark blue cement tile floor.

6 – The office under the roof
Under a roof window is a good location for a home office. The office enjoys plenty of light without the risk of glare. What’s more, you won’t be distracted by outside activities, allowing you to concentrate fully.
7 – Where to position the desk in relation to the window?
To ensure optimum brightness in your office, whether natural or artificial, here are a few important tips to follow:
- Avoid placing your desk with its back to the window to prevent annoying reflections on the computer screen. Instead, position your desk facing the window to take full advantage of natural light without being disturbed. Don’t forget to provide blinds or curtains to soften the sun’s intensity if necessary. No-drill blinds are very practical in an office environment. A curtain is also necessary if the desk is installed perpendicular to the window.
- Artificial lighting is of course also necessary for the winter season or if you work late at night. A good desk lamp is essential. Preferably one with an articulated arm, so you can direct the light exactly where you need it, to spare your eyes and avoid eyestrain.
- Multiply light sources by adding accent lamps in several places around the office. This distributes light evenly throughout the workspace and avoids shadows.
By following these tips, you’ll create a well-lit working environment, conducive to concentration and visual comfort, whether using natural or artificial light.
