Learn to draw and watercolor flowers

Drawing and watercolor painting are two relaxing and satisfying creative activities. But when you’ve never drawn or haven’t drawn for a long time, you don’t necessarily know how to get started.

I’m not going to offer you a drawing or watercolor course, because like you, I’m just starting out!

So here I list the free tutorials I use to learn how to draw.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of copying the drawing, sometimes, for watercolors, you need to see how it’s done.

So here you’ll find images found on Pinterest and links to artists’ websites or Instagram accounts.

Watercolor and drawing

Kate Kyehyun Park’s Instagram account is a good introduction to watercolor. This artist also offers classes, but the Instagram account already lets you learn how to draw flowers and then see how to paint them.

These same techniques are presented step by step on the ArtistHue website.

To practice drawing with a more confident hand, I copy this type of simple black pencil drawing. I find these drawings on Pinterest.

Using watercolour pencils

Here’s a video that explains the use of watercolor pencils, which can make it easier for beginners to take their first steps. Worth a try!

Watercolor Instagram accounts

Instagram is a great source of inspiration. The problem with reels, however, is that you can’t take a break. So I prefer Youtube videos. But the watercolorists on Instagram give you a quick idea of techniques, materials and what’s possible in general.

Garima Srivastava’s account offers quick and easy-to-reproduce little reels. I particularly like her little Christmas trees.

Miglis: this is the account that made me want to learn. I’ve never bought her courses, but I love admiring her poetic creations.

Prachi from Color.me.water

This account also exists on Youtube where Prachi slowly details the creations they quickly present on Instagram. I love her wispy flowers that make watercolor look easy.

There are, of course, many other remarkable accounts. Feel free to share your favorite watercolor accounts in comments.

Where can I find inexpensive materials to start watercolour painting?

I simply started with the materials, brushes and paper, from Action.

The paper isn’t perfect and tends to make little paper balls if it gets too wet.

Brushes lack flexibility.

But for starters, I think it’s enough. You can try it out for a small fee and see if you like watercolour. You can practice and do ugly drawings for a long time without thinking “Wow, here’s an ugly drawing that cost me 5 euros!

For the watercolor palette, I chose one from Amazon , which I’m really enjoying so far.

I’ve also bought some A3 paper, but for the moment I’m only using it to make cyanotypes.
